Sweet William Info

Sweet William (SW) plant is a species of Dianthhus and an ornamental garden plant. It hails from southern Europe and parts of Asia. SW is a perennial plant growing up to 75 cm tall and blooms densely in cluster at the top up to 30 flowers. Cultivars of SW are white, pink, red, purple or multiple patterns while the wild ones are red with white base. Each flower admeasures 2 to 3 cm in diameter with five petals in sharp edges.

Sweet William flowers are edible and attract bees, birds and butterflies. It is believed to contain medicinal properties and the plant thrives on light alkaline soil with sun to partial shade. Sweet William got celebrity status in 2011 at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton when Middleton used it in her bouquet.
